Driving School Services

New Drivers Under 18

Capabilities is a State of Ohio licensed driving school and this service fulfills the driver education class requirement for persons under the age of 18 to obtain a driver’s license. This class provides first-time teen drivers with the knowledge and skills they will need to safely operate a motor vehicle.

This course includes the required 24 hours of classroom instruction and eight hours of on the road driving and can be completed in the following ways:

  • Option #1: This option is available in Auglaize and Instructor teaches students through video call platformMercer counties and includes 24 hours of VIRTUAL classroom instruction with a live instructor, and also includes the required in-person eight hours of behind-the-wheel instruction – the total cost is $360. The virtual classroom is interactive and students must attend all 24 hours of the virtual instruction – click here to register. Students will also register for the in-person eight hours of behind-the-wheel instruction once they have registered for this option and have completed two hours of the classroom instruction and have their learner’s permit.
  • Option #2: This option is available in Auglaize and Mercer counties and includes 24 hours of self-paced ONLINE classroom instruction through our third-party partner Costech – click here to schedule and see the cost. This option is also available for individuals in Auglaize and Mercer counties who completed their classroom instruction through another driving school. The required eight hours of in-person behind-the-wheel instruction in Auglaize and Mercer counties can start after two hours of the online class are completed and after they have obtained their learner’s permit. A two-hour certificate of completion from the online course is required to schedule the behind the wheel instruction – the cost for the eight hours of in-person behind-the-wheel instruction is $360 – click here to schedule those sessions (click ‘Schedule Now’ and utilize the top option and click ‘BOOK THIS SERVICE’ to use the calendar to schedule four sessions).
  • Option #3: This option is available anywhere in Ohio and includes 24 hours of self-paced ONLINE classroom instruction through our third-party partner Costech – click here to schedule and see the cost. In addition, the student must complete the required eight hours of in-person behind-the-wheel instruction through another driver’s education provider. A list of all the driving schools in Ohio can be found here. The student must contact an Ohio driving school and register for the behind-the-wheel separate from the ONLINE instruction.

Abbreviated Adult Driver Training Course

In-car driving instruction with instructor holding up his hand to signal for the driver to stop or slow downThis course assists adult drivers with satisfying the state requirement for completing an abbreviated training course when failing to pass either the maneuverability and/or road test on their first attempt. 

Per the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles, starting July 1, 2017, adults aged 18 years and older who have never held a driver’s license before and who have not passed their first attempt at the maneuverability and/or road test are required to take an Abbreviated Adult Training Course. There are four options to complete this course:

  • Option #1: This option includes four hours of VIRTUAL classroom instruction – click here to register for the VIRTUAL classroom – the total cost is $100. PLUS, to complete the requirements for this option for the Abbreviated Adult course, you must also complete 24 hours of driving with a licensed driver of your choice (not a licensed instructor) who is at least 21 years of age. Applicants who choose this option for 24 hours of driving with a licensed driver 21 years of age or older cannot complete more than four hours of driving in one day. Applicants who choose this option are required to complete (and have notarized) the Twenty-Four Hour Affidavit (form BMV 5789) in order to provide proof that the driving was completed. The certificate you receive for completing the VIRTUAL classroom portion of this option also needs to be presented.
  • Option #2: This option includes four hours of ONLINE self-paced instruction through our third-party partner Costech and 24 hours of driving with a licensed driver who is at least 21 years of age – click here to register for the ONLINE instruction. Applicants who choose the option for 24 hours of driving with a licensed driver 21 years of age or older cannot complete more than four hours of driving in one day. In addition, applicants who choose this option are required to complete the Twenty-Four Hour Affidavit (form BMV 5789).
  • Option #3: This option includes four hours of VIRTUAL classroom instruction with a live instructor and four hours of in-person behind-the-wheel driving with a licensed Driving Instructor – the total cost is $472 – click here register for this option. Students must also register for four hours of in-person behind-the-wheel instruction once they have completed the classroom portion of this option – call (419) 394-0003 ext. 1300 to sign up.
  • Option #4: This option includes four hours of ONLINE self-paced instruction through our third-party partner Costech – click here to schedule the online classroom instruction and see the cost. This option also includes the required four hours of in-person driving with a licensed Driving Instructor. The behind-the-wheel driving instruction has a cost of $372 (separate cost from the ONLINE class). Students must register for four hours of in-person behind-the-wheel instruction once they have completed the classroom portion of this option – call (419) 394-0003 ext. 1300 to sign up.

The ONLINE and VIRTUAL courses are approved by the Ohio Department of Public Safety. You will receive a certificate upon successful completion of these courses.

Driving Service Descriptions

Driving Assessment (DA)

  • A Capabilities trained and certified instructor meets with the person served, evaluates baseline driving law and sign skills and baseline-driving skills, and sends a report outlining approximate amount of instruction hours needed and areas of focus for driving instruction. Capabilities Driving Instructors are licensed through the State of Ohio to provide instruction to all students, including people with disabilities.

Pre-Drivers Education (PDE) [Class D] 

  • One-on-one virtual or in-person tutoring to guide a student through the studying and steps to obtain a valid Ohio Class D driving permit. Instruction is provided through individualized teaching on the laws and road signs, using the Digest of Ohio Motor Vehicle Laws (a free audio version of the Digest can be found here), published driver’s education curriculum, online sites, and customized driver’s education curriculum based on individual need. A final summary report is provided should the potential driver be deemed not ready to obtain a driving permit. 

On the Road Driving Instruction (DT)

  • Driving students will receive one-on-one in-person behind-the-wheel driving instruction to obtain a valid Ohio driver’s license. Capabilities Driving Instructors are licensed through the State of Ohio to provide driving instruction to all students, including people with disabilities. Lessons typically are scheduled for two hours at a time.

First Time Driver’s Safety Course – Group (FTDSC)

  • For first time drivers over the age of 18 years. Capabilities trained and certified instructors provide this one-day assessment and training. Students will be assessed in the following two areas: ability to obtain the Ohio driving permit and ability to obtain Ohio driver’s license. Students participate in a day-long class focusing on driver safety, driver responsibility, law, and signs. Capabilities Driving Instructors are licensed through the State of Ohio to provide driving instruction to all students, including people with disabilities. This is a group service for two or more individuals and a final report is provided outlining results and recommendations.

Adult Abbreviated Online Course

  • The Adult Abbreviated Online Course is required to be completed for anyone 18 years and older who has never held a driver’s license and who failed their first attempt at the maneuverability and/or road test. For the Adult Abbreviated Online Course, Pre-Drivers Education (PDE) can be authorized for a Capabilities Career Consultant to assist persons with completion of the Adult Abbreviated Online Course. For this assistance, funding sources are asked to please authorize PDE in addition to this course. Capabilities also offers an Adult Abbreviated Virtual course with a live instructor.
